Committing Myself

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to my niece and a couple of girls her age. Well, I walked up on them while they were talking and like most girls their age, they got quiet and looked at me with that guilty look of a certain "private" discussion. When it's not really private, I mean I was their age once. So anyway, I made the comment to them that they looked like they had a lot to talk about or they looked like someone needed to talk to them about some things. Man, was I right. So my niece says to me, "Yeah Auntie, you may need to have another sleepover."

Well that comment stayed with me and on my mind for about a week or so and today I made a decision. I decided that I would get these girls together for a weekend retreat. There is so much I wanted to be able to talk to them about that I knew one night wouldn't be enough. So here I am in the planning stages of something I think will be of great benefit to those girls and also myself. I've always wanted to do something like this. And in the past I have had sleepovers for my nieces and other girls in our community, but we never could get to the point of talking about things that effect them as young teenage girls. I am younger then most of their mothers so I think that's an advantage for me. It wasn't too long ago that I was in their shoes. And as we know everyone doesn't have a mother that they feel comfortable enough to talk to. So I have big plans for this. I'm a big dreamer, but I'm going to start small. Just 4 or 5 girls at a time. I figure if I can commit myself to them at least once a month maybe it can really help and develop into something that makes a positive impact on them. Maybe something we discuss will help them make the right decisions when faced with all the peer pressure that comes from middle school and high school. I want them to be leaders, not followers. And the first step to being a leader is being able to think for yourself.

I realize that this is a major responsibility so I want to get all the info I need and present it to them in a way to where they will receive it. I could be on to something here and this could be something major. If they are wanting the talk I'm going to give it to them. Information and education are the best tools when making a decision.
